There are two ways to provide simultaneous interpreting on site:

a) Booth

The interpreters work in a sound-proofed booth which may not be in the same room as the participants. Thanks to dedicated equipment those participants who require the interpretation listen in by means of wireless headsets and receivers. This is a particularly comfortable solution for the interpreters and for all the participants because those who do not need the interpretation are not disturbed. The interpreters can speak perfectly normally, making the interpretation much more comfortable to listen to.

b) Portable system

For meetings with relatively few participants (roughly no more than thirty), we use a portable solution transported in a carrying case, containing a microphone and wireless headsets, which is commonly called a “bidule”. The interpreters remain in the same room as the participants and interpret into the microphone in a low voice. Participants requiring the interpretation listen in on the headsets. This is an extremely flexible and inexpensive solution when the group is on the move, e.g. during a site visit, or for a small meeting in a room not equipped for simultaneous interpreting.

2. Liaison interpreting

No equipment is required for this type of interpreting. The conversations between the participants are interpreted immediately. Liaison interpreting is the perfect solution for business negotiations, or for when there are very few participants. It is also used for field visits, in factories, power plants and industrial platforms of all kinds. The aim here is to accompany visitors, trainers, auditors, inspectors, or trainees who are visiting one or more sites and need to communicate with the local personnel. For this type of interpreting, it is particularly important to make sure you select an interpreter who is fully familiar with the technical specificities of your field.

3. Consecutive interpreting

This interpreting mode is particularly suitable for speeches and presentations. The interpreter listens to the speaker, takes notes, and then conveys the meaning of their words to the audience. The speaker may or may not pause during the speech to allow the interpreter to interpret. However, it is important to bear in mind that this type of interpreting doubles the time required for the speech or presentation. This is an important factor to consider if there are time constraints.

Remote interpreting:

The development of remote interpreting was given a huge boost by the Covid-19 pandemic, although even beforehand it was being used increasingly. There are many different remote interpreting platforms: Kudo, Interprefy, Voice Boxer, etc. – in addition of course to the ubiquitous Zoom. They differ mainly in terms of cost, and their interfaces which vary in suitability for simultaneous interpreting. Most of them can easily be integrated into your communication software tools such as Microsoft Teams.

The main advantage of remote interpreting is its low cost. When long distances are involved, it costs a great deal more to pay for an interpreter’s travel, accommodation, and food than to pay for a remote interpreting service.
